PRESS RELEASE – DATA SURVEY The Department of Agriculture Western Cape embarked on a survey to establish a database of all farmers in the Western Cape. The survey will be conducted by Geostratics on behalf of the Department. The first phase of the project is to compile a comprehensive list of farmers and basic information on farming activities. During the second phase, the level of empowerment in the agriculture sector in the Western Cape will be determined and farmers will be requested to provide more details in this regard. The Department intend to use this information to build a comprehensive database of all its clients in the Western Cape. Such a database will assist the Department in making informed decisions e.g. focussing its support where it is needed. Farmers and agricultural land owners are requested to kindly cooperate with this survey by completing the questionnaires and make themselves available for interviews when requested. Currently no detailed record exists of all farmers in the Western Cape and no complete figures are available on the level of Black Economic Empowerment and yet progress has been made in this regard. Previous surveys focussed on data from the Department of Land Affairs, Municipalities and the Department of Agriculture. It is believed that only through a comprehensive survey can the complete picture of the level of empowerment and development be established. Not only is this information important to determine whether the set targets are achievable, but will also assist the Department to understand the needs of its clients and thus direct and focus their resources appropriately. Farmers will be contacted via mail to participate in the survey. Farmers are also invited to contact Geostratics, should they have information on empowerment initiatives on farms or if they have recently acquired a farm.
